I like to build walls

I like to build walls.
Not like real walls made of brick,
metaphorical walls.
The kind of walls that separate myself from the rest of the world.
Except I'm not sure if my walls are being built to separate me from the world,
or the world from me.
I didn't used to build walls.
Then I experienced pain,
heartbreak,
betrayal,
dishonesty.
So I decided to start building walls.
They protect me.
Make me feel stronger.
The less of myself that I let others see, the better off I am
I don't have to worry if I can trust someone or not
Seems easier this way.
But it can be lonely.
I think the real reason I build walls isn't to separate myself at all,
they are built to see who cares enough to try and knock them down.
Maybe one day someone will try to knock down my walls,
and I will let them.
I'm not ready to yet, but one day
For now, I'd rather have that loneliness than all the pain.
I like to build walls.
